Sep 16, 2015 The Sruti and the Smriti are the two eyes of the Brahmanas created by God. If deprived [of' the knowledge] of the one, [a person] is called one-eyed ;and if of the two, a blind. (25)(Harita Smriti) So,the Harita Smriti also mean the Dharma Shastras only when it refers to Smriti. Hence,Smritis are the Dharma Shastras. And Srutis are the Vedas. Let me explain what "Smriti is rooted in Shruti" means. Smriti refers to those texts which are authored by a reliable authority figure in order to elucidate the eternal truths whose sound is reverberating in the Universe. And it doesn't matter of the message of the Gita is eternal; the message of all Smriti texts is eternal. Jul 19, 2023 So, new names of Smriti-authors are Kashyapa, Pracheta etc but probably these texts are not extant now. Viswamitra, Devala, Marichi, Pracheta, Narada, etc are the authors of the respective Upasmritis. And, as far as I know, few of them (like Viswamitra, Narada) are extant even now. But most of them seems to have been completely lost. May 26, 2023 The Vyasa Smriti written by Vyasa is mentioned in at least two of the lists but his more important contributions, the Mahabharata and Puranas, are absent. Also I was reading the writings of Prof. Purushottama Bilimoria who is a fellow at Oxford University and he makes quite a grand claim about all the texts included in smriti. Shankaracharya is not the one that made the classification. One of the earliest references is Manu Smriti. Manu writes in 2.10: But my Sruti (revelation) is meant the Veda, and by Smriti (tradition) the Institutes of the sacred law; those two must not be called into question in any matter, since from those two the sacred law [dharma] shone forth. The Parashara Smriti also lists 20 smritis although it replaces Yama, Brihaspati and Vyasa with Kashyapa, Gargya and Pracheta. And the Padma Purana lists 36 smritis; its list is similar to the one used by Yajnavalkha but it omits Atri and adds the following 17 new

smritis May 27, 2016 The English translation of Manu Smriti is available at sacred-texts.com (George Bhler) and also on archive.org (Max Mller). EDIT: Another English tr. of Manusmriti with the Commentary of Medhatithi is available at: wisdomlib.org (work in progress) I suppose Smriti Shastras do not encourage sex before marriage. But these days, it is pretty common. I want to know the views of Smriti Shastras on it. What kind of punishment is prescribed for girls? Jan 27, 2019 1.3.3 - When there is conflict between Shruti and Smriti, the Smriti should be disregarded; because it is only when there is no such conflict that there is an inference of Vedic text in support of Smriti. Sutra 1 is the opponent's viewpoint. Jan 19, 2019 First of all, the word "Manusmriti" means "recollection of Manu", where "smriti" means "recollection." And second, the first line of Medhatithi's Manuscript of the Manusmriti says this: The Great Sages, having approached Manu , paid their respect to him in due form, and finding him seated with mind calm and collected, addressed him these words
